The DR Priority sets the priority of an IP interface to become the Designated router for the multiple access network. A numerically larger priority is always preferred, yet a lower number represents a higher priority. A router's knowledge of the current DR on an interface can change when a PIM Hello message is received, when a neighbor times out, or when a router's own DR priority changes.
