Rules for <substring> characters:

- <substring> must contain printable ASCII characters.
- <substring> must not contain the 'double quote' character
or the ' ' (space) character on its own.
- <substring> match is case sensitive.
- <substring> must not include any Regular Expression
meta-characters.
- The '\' character is used as an ESCAPE sequence.
- the following ESCAPE sequences are permitted within
the <substring>:
