The encoding value indicates the serial encoding mechanism that is the nominal design target of the particular transceiver. The value shall be contained in the serial data. The defined encoding values are: Bit 7: 64B/66B Bit 6: 8B/10B Bit 5: SONET scrambled Bit 4: NRZ Bit 3: RZ Bits 2-0: Reserved.
