Object

This object is an 'alias' name for
the lower-layer interface on top of
which this IP interface is defined.
The alias is specified by the network
manager, and provides a non-volatile
'handle' for the lower-layer
interface. The semantics of the object
are similar to the semantics of the
ifAlias object, defined by the
Interfaces MIB. At the time when this
Madge MIB object was defined, the
latest release of the Interfaces MIB
was draft-ietf-ifmib-mib-05.txt. The
purpose is to support all methods
(static or dynamic) for creation of
interfaces and to allow creation of IP
table entries without the need of the
layer 2 interface to be present on the
device at the time of the creation. It
is assumed that some implementation
dependent mechanisms allow the IP
application to be informed about the
creation of new lower layer
interfaces.
